Dentures

When you lose your teeth, one of the options for replacement of missing teeth is a denture. Dentures can help to improve appearance and function. The denture teeth are made to closely resemble your natural teeth. Being removable, it can be taken out to clean to remove food debris.

Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

A denture may be either conventional or immediate. A conventional type is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, usually taking 6 to 8 weeks. During this period of 6 to 8 weeks, the patient will have to go without teeth.

Immediate dentures are made prior to removing the teeth (in particular front teeth) and immediately placed after the teeth are taken out, thus patient does not have to go without teeth during the healing process. However, adjustments often have to be made to improve the fit and retention of the dentures once the tissues shrink and heal.

While dentures can last for many years, they may have to be remade, repaired, or adjusted due to damage or normal wear. It is important to see your dentist for regular check-ups to have your dentures and remaining teeth maintained.
